Computational Models of Argument


Proceedings of COMMA 2020

The investigation of computational models of argument is a rich and fascinating interdisciplinary research field with two ultimate aims: the theoretical goal of understanding argumentation as a cognitive phenomenon by modeling it in computer programs, and the practical goal of supporting the development of computer-based systems able to engage in argumentation-related activities with human users or among themselves.

The biennial International Conferences on Computational Models of Argument (COMMA) provide a dedicated forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest advancements in the field, and cover both basic research and innovative applications. This book presents the proceedings of COMMA 2020. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, COMMA 2020 was held as an online event on the originally scheduled dates of 8 -11 September 2020, organised by the University of Perugia, Italy. The book includes 28 full papers and 13 short papers selected from a total of 78 submissions, the abstracts of 3 invited talks and 13 demonstration abstracts. The interdisciplinary nature of the field is reflected, and contributions cover both theory and practice. Theoretical contributions include new formal models, the study of formal or computational properties of models, designs for implemented systems and experimental research. Practical papers include applications to medicine, law and criminal investigation, chatbots and online product reviews. The argument-mining trend from previous COMMA’s is continued, while an emerging trend this year is the use of argumentation for explainable AI.

The book provided an overview of the latest work on computational models of argument, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.

24th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 29 August–8 September 2020, Santiago de Compostela, Spain – Including 10th Conference on Prestigious Applications of Artificial Intelligence (PAIS 2020)

This book presents the proceedings of the 24th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2020), held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, from 29 August to 8 September 2020. The conference was postponed from June, and much of it conducted online due to the COVID-19 restrictions. The conference is one of the principal occasions for researchers and practitioners of AI to meet and discuss the latest trends and challenges in all fields of AI and to demonstrate innovative applications and uses of advanced AI technology. The book also includes the proceedings of the 10th Conference on Prestigious Applications of Artificial Intelligence (PAIS 2020) held at the same time.

A record number of more than 1,700 submissions was received for ECAI 2020, of which 1,443 were reviewed. Of these, 361 full-papers and 36 highlight papers were accepted (an acceptance rate of 25% for full-papers and 45% for highlight papers). The book is divided into three sections: ECAI full papers; ECAI highlight papers; and PAIS papers. The topics of these papers cover all aspects of AI, including Agent-based and Multi-agent Systems; Computational Intelligence; Constraints and Satisfiability; Games and Virtual Environments; Heuristic Search; Human Aspects in AI; Information Retrieval and Filtering; Knowledge Representation and Reasoning; Machine Learning; Multidisciplinary Topics and Applications; Natural Language Processing; Planning and Scheduling; Robotics; Safe, Explainable, and Trustworthy AI; Semantic Technologies; Uncertainty in AI; and Vision.

Information Technology and Intelligent Transportation Systems

Intelligent transport systems, from basic management systems to more application-oriented systems, vary in the technologies they apply. Information technologies, including wireless communication, are important in intelligent transportation systems, as are computational technologies: floating car data/floating cellular data, sensing technologies, and video vehicle detection. Theoretical and application technologies, such as emergency vehicle notification systems, automatic road enforcement and collision avoidance systems, as well as some cooperative systems are also used in intelligent transportation systems.

This book presents papers selected from the 128 submissions in the field of information technology and intelligent transportation systems received from 5 countries. In December 2019 Chang’an University organized a round-table meeting to discuss and score the technical merits of each selected paper, of which 23 are included in this book.

JURIX 2019: The Thirty-second Annual Conference

In recent years, the application of machine learning tools to legally relevant tasks has become much more prevalent, and the growing influence of AI in the legal sphere has prompted the profession to take more of an interest in the explainability, trustworthiness, and responsibility of intelligent systems.

This book presents the proceedings of the 32nd International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems (JURIX 2019), held in Madrid, Spain, from 11 to 13 December 2019. Traditionally focused on legal knowledge representation and engineering, computational models of legal reasoning, and analyses of legal data, more recently the conference has also encompassed the use of machine learning tools. A total of 81 submissions were received for the conference, of which 14 were selected as full papers and 17 as short papers. A further 3 submissions were accepted as demo presentations, resulting in a total acceptance rate of 41.98%, with a competitive 25.5% acceptance rate for full papers. The 34 papers presented here cover a broad range of topics, from computational models of legal argumentation, case-based reasoning, legal ontologies, and evidential reasoning, through classification of different types of text in legal documents and comparing similarities, to the relevance of judicial decisions to issues of governmental transparency.

The book will be of interest to all those whose work involves the use of knowledge and information systems in the legal sphere.

Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases XXXI

Information modeling and knowledge bases have become an important area of academic and industry research in the 21st century, addressing complexities of modeling that reach beyond the traditional borders of information systems and academic computer science research.

This book presents 32 reviewed, selected and updated papers delivered at the 29th International Conference on Information Modeling and Knowledge Bases (EJC2019), held in Lappeenranta, Finland, from 3 to 7 June 2019. The Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining (FSDM) conference is an annual event encompassing four main themes: fuzzy theory, algorithms and systems, which includes topics like stability, foundations and control; fuzzy application, which covers different kinds of processing as well as hardware and architectures for big data and time series and has wide applicability; the interdisciplinary field of fuzzy logic and data mining, encompassing applications in electrical, industrial, chemical and engineering fields as well as management and environmental issues; and data mining, outlining new approaches to big data, massive data, scalable, parallel and distributed algorithms. The annual conference provides a platform for knowledge exchange between international experts, researchers, academics and delegates from industry.

This book includes the papers accepted and presented at the 5th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining (FSDM 2019), held in Kitakyushu, Japan on 18-21 October 2019. This year, FSDM received 442 submissions. All papers were carefully reviewed by program committee members, taking account of the quality, novelty, soundness, breadth and depth of the research topics falling within the scope of FSDM. The committee finally decided to accept 137 papers, which represents an acceptance rate of about 30%. The papers presented here are arranged in two sections: Fuzzy Sets and Data Mining, and Communications and Networks.
